Travel to Sweden from the U.S. with ETIAS
Citizens of the United States do not need a visa to go to Sweden for up to 90 days.
American passport holders can visit Sweden, or any other Schengen Area nation, visa-free for business, tourism, and short-term study.
U.S. citizens will soon need to register with the European Travel and Information System, ETIAS, to enter Sweden. ETIAS will be operational from 2026.

ETIAS Sweden for U.S. Citizens
From 2026, U.S. citizens need to apply online for ETIAS before traveling to Sweden or other Schengen countries.
ETIAS is a new travel authorization for all visa-exempt visitors. It is similar to the United States ESTA.
To apply, you need to complete the simple online ETIAS application, providing basic personal and travel information and passport details.
The ETIAS registration process for Sweden is 100% online. You’re notified by email once the visa waiver has been approved.
ETIAS requirements for U.S. citizens to visit Sweden
You need your U.S. passport to apply for ETIAS. It must be machine-readable and valid for at least 3 months after you exit the Schengen Area. Your passport number, issue date, and expiry date must be provided.
You also need an email address and a debit or credit card to complete your application.
Visa-free travel conditions
To meet the ETIAS Sweden eligibility requirements, you must be visiting the Schengen Area for:
- No more than 90 days per 180 period
- Tourism, business, or study
You’ll answer some basic security questions to verify you’re eligibility for visa-free travel to Sweden.
How many times can Americans visit Sweden with ETIAS?
You do not need to apply for ETIAS each time you visit Sweden or other European destinations. ETIAS is valid for 3 years or until your U.S. passport expires.
The same travel authorization can be used for multiple trips to Sweden, provided your ETIAS and passport are still valid. Each stay must not exceed the 90 per 180-day limit.
