EU Visa Waiver for U.S. Citizens Visiting Romania
Romania is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area. As an official Schengen member, the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will apply for Romania.
Due to be rolled out in 2026, ETIAS is an electronic travel permit for visa-exempt travelers heading to Europe. U.S. passport holders will need to register online and receive an ETIAS visa waiver to enter the Schengen zone.

ETIAS Romania for U.S. Citizens
American citizens will need to apply for ETIAS to visit Romania. ETIAS will soon be a mandatory entry requirement to travel from the U.S. to any of the Schengen states.
ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization for visa-exempt visitors. It is being introduced to improve border management and increase security.
A Romanian ETIAS will be valid to enter every Schengen country, not just Romania. The total time spent in the travel zone must not exceed 90 days per 180-day period.
ETIAS Requirements for U.S. citizens to visit Romania
It will be quick and easy to apply for ETIAS for Romania online. Travelers will complete an electronic form with personal details and passport information, including:
- Name, date of birth, and nationality
- U.S. passport details (number, issue, and expiry date)
- Email address
American applicants are also required to answer security questions. Anyone who does not meet all the ETIAS requirements for Romania will not be granted visa-free entry.
To complete the application, U.S. citizens must pay a small fee to process the ETIAS for Romania.
